Business and Economy in Batala

Iron Industry in Batala

In the history of Punjab, Batala had been renowned for its foundry business. Metal castings were the main business of people residing in this small city of India. Not only in the country, but neighboring countries also ordered C.I. Castings from various industries in Batala. With such glory, Batala was named as the Iron Bird of Asia.

Till today Batala is known for its good foundry work and many people visit this city to purchase such important industrial equipments for their sugar and rice mills. About 788 cast iron and more than 1200 machine tool manufacturing units used to function in the city till the end of twentieth century. However, with time and lack of proper help the industry has been decimated. Today the industry has shifted to many other cities of India. Militancy and insufficient concern from the then government may have caused this downfall.



However, Batala’s economy still seizes about ten percent from this industry. Many people are employed in the manufacturing units in the city. Recently the situations downgrading the most prominent industry in this municipality, has been minimized. Militants did not let many customers to buy these castings from Batala.

Sugar Mills in Batala

Batala also has some sugar mills that supply flavored syrups and Indian sherbets to a lot of places. These sugar mills also make a major part of the economy of Batala. It is also one of the major industries of the state Punjab since sugarcanes are cultivated here in abundance.

One major mill is Sun Agro Foods. Their products are available in most cities of the country. They manufacture Concentrates & Flavors, Dark Treacle, Invert Sugar Syrup, and Indian Sherbets.

Woolen Produces in Batala

Batala is also known for its good products made from wool. Many local people are engaged in supplying and manufacturing woolen products that are sold in local markets, malls and other towns of the state.

There are bazaars that have been established about two-three centuries back. These bazaars have flourished since then and function well even today. Tourists visiting Gurdwara Kandh Sahib or Achleshwar Dham visit Batala bazaars once for local products.

Batala is a Police Tehsil of the State. There are many Punjab State Government administrative offices that have employed local people through proper channels.
